37th Kadayawan Sa Dabaw 2022 Update: Sayaw Kadayawan Official Rules and Guidelines


Sayaw Kadayawan is one of the highlight event of the 37th Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2022, which showcases Indigenous-inspired dance of theatrical tribal suites depicting indigenous, epic folklores, and tradition of eleven (11) tribes in Davao City.

For 37th Kadayawan sa Dabaw, here are the official rules and guidelines.

SAYAW KADAYAWAN

An Indigenous-Inspired dance competition of theatrical tribal suites depicting Indigenous epic, folklores and tradition of eleven (11) tribes in davao.

OFFICIAL RULES AND GUIDELINES

1. Sayaw Kadayawan, is open to all dance groups of students, out-of-school youth and community-based performers in Mindanao.

2. There are two (2) categories in the competition:

OPEN CATEGORY -intended for adults and youth dance groups with performers who are above twelve (12) years old or if in school are grade 7 and above. However, younger performers of twelve (12) years old but not younger than seven (7) years old who wish to compete with more experienced groups are also allowed to join this category.

CHILDREN’s CATEGORY -exclusively for children aged 7 to 12 years old or if in school the equivalent of Grade 1 to Grade 6. However, Grade 1 pupils below seven (7) years old on August 19 are not allowed but Grade 6 pupils above twelve (12) years old but below fifteen (15) years old are still allowed to participate provided they do not exceed 1/5 of the number of total performers. 

NOTE: A PERFORMER (DANCER OR MUSICIAN) IN BOTH CATEGORIES IS ONLY ALLOWED TO PERFORM IN ONE GROUP. A PERFORMER WHO PERFORMS TWICE AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFIES THE GROUP THAT HE OR SHE REPRESENTS.

3. The competition will be held on August 18 at the Bantawan Stage (Amphitheatre) Magsaysay Park, Davao City. from 09:00 o’clock in the morning onwards.

4. All participating groups will perform at the Bantawan Stage (Amphitheatre) Magsaysay Park, Davao City.

5. Entries should submit a video of their production for preliminary judging with complete costume and props. The video presentation will comprise five percent (5%) of the total average score for judging.

6. From the entries, the top Seven (7) from the Open and the top Five (5) from the Children’s Category will receive a corresponding award. The rest will receive a fifteen thousand pesos (Php 15,000.00) participation prize.

7. Entries should be any legend, folk story, cultural practices or a documentary of important socio-cultural and even political event of an indigenous community utilizing the indigenous movement and music of the tribe in focus in or reinterpreted version provided its reinterpretation do not lose the essence of the particularity of the tribe being represented. Materials should focus on the eleven (11) tribes in Davao.

8. Musical accompaniment should be live by performers who will form part of the required number of performers. For the children’s category. Only two (2) adult performers will be allowed to accompany the music pool. The use of synthesizers and other electronic instruments is not allowed. Violation of this item would merit disqualification.

9. The minimum number of performers per entry including musicians is ten (10) while the maximum is twenty-five (25).

10. Solo performers will be allowed provided shall be interspersed in the dance medley and will not exceed one third (1/3) of the time of the entire presentation.

11. Time limit of each presentation is a minimum of six (6) and maximum of eight (8) minutes. Time starts when the first note of the music is heard or when the first movement is done, whichever comes earlier. One minute is allotted to arrange and preset the sets and props and another one (1) minute for taking out all props and sets. For every minute less or more than the time allotment, two points deduction will be made from each of the judges’ scores. 

12. The allowable maximum dimension of props and sets is 5 ft. (height) by 3 ft. (width). Only two (2) risers with three (3) ft. width are allowed. In this regard, the committee reserves the right to refuse large, bulky and voluminous props and sets. All participating groups are required to submit to the committee the specific dimension of the props and sets that they will use.

13. Lighting during the presentations will be for visibility and sound system will be provided for the musical instruments needing amplification. However, special requirements for lights and sounds can be pre-arranged by the groups’ Official Representative with the Sayaw Kadayawan Committee.

14. The use of fire, fire crackers, smoke grenade, party poppers, live animals and killing of live animals are not allowed. Groups who will use these for special effects or for any other reasons will be automatically disqualified.

15. The Champion in both categories are required to perform during the PASASALAMAT on the scheduled date

16. The Criteria for judging are the following:

Choreoraphy and Creativity - 30% 

• Interpretation and creative translation of cultural material to dance
• formation and choreographic presentation
• Creative transition from one dance sequence to another
• Blocking, neatness of the whole ensemble

Performance - 30%

• Mastery, timing and synchronization of dance movements
• Expression and characterization of the performers
• Confidence and enthusiasm of the performers
• Quick and systematic entrance and exit of performers and props
• Discipline of performers

Research Material - 5% 

• Truthfulness of the materials as reflected by the sources, references & documentation
• Written presentation of the material and the synopsis of the presentation

Production Design - 10%

• Aesthetic appeal, artistic quality & appropriateness of costumes, props & colors
• Truthful tribal representation 
• Relevance of props to the material and tribe in focus

Music - 20%

• The musical score, selection and composition of the music provided that may include songs, chants, sounds and special effects
• The artistic quality of the musical performance or execution
• Appropriateness of musical ensemble including the instruments used to the tribe represented

Video Presentation -  5%

• Judging the Video Production

Total: 100%

17. The Sayaw Kadayawan Committee encourages participants to research for new materials. For this reason, it is included in the judging criteria.

18. The ranking method will be used in the selection of winners. To break a tie, if any, the mode of the judges’ individual ranking/ weighted rank will be used. If such is ineffective, the point system will be used. Should there still be a tie the Chairman of the Board of Judges will have to break the tie.

19. Judges for the competition shall be composed of Outstanding Filipino artists in the field of dance, folk and theatre arts and other related performing arts. Their decision is final and irrevocable.

20. Entries will be limited to twenty (20) slots only for the two categories on a first come first serve basis. The number of entries per category will be determined upon submission of entry forms.

The twenty entries will receive a participation prize of (Php 15,000.00) apart from the prize won/award.

21. Cash Prizes are as follows:

Open Category

1st Place - Php200, 000.00, a trophy and medal’s

2nd Place - Php150,000.00 and a trophy

3rd Place - Php100,000.00 and a trophy

4th to 7th Place -Php40,000.00 each and a certificate

Children’s Category

1st Place -Php150,000.00, a trophy and medals

2nd Place - Php100,000.00 and a trophy

3rd Place -Php70,000.00 and a trophy

4th and 5TH Place -Php30,000.00 each and a certificate

Participation Prizes (20) -Php15,000.00 each and a certificate 

22. The participating groups must submit to the Sayaw Kadayawan Committee, on or before August 14, 2022, the following:

a). Video of production entry.

b). Completely accomplished Official Entry Form (Sayaw Form 1 – 2 copies)

c). Storyline/synopsis of the dance presentation with the tribe-in-focus, the source of material (and brief description of the process of research – 10 copies) 

d). List of participants with respective ages (Sayaw Form 2 – 3 copies)
 
e). For the participants of the Children’s Category, a certification of age compliance (Sayaw Form 3 – 2 copies) signed by the School Principal or the mayor or anybody in the same capacity who can certify the veracity of the ages of the performers. Should there be complains on non-compliance of age requirement from among the participants, the burden of proof shall` be laid on the complainant. The complaint must be made in writing before the citation is made.
 
f). List of props and sets with specific description accompanied by visual illustration and dimension (Sayaw Form 4 – 3 copies)

23. Participating groups are required to designate one (1) Official Representative who will coordinate with the Sayaw Kadayawan Committee. The committee will only deal with the Official Representatives and nobody else.

24. Any cash prize will only be paid to the Official Representative whose name and signature appears on the Official Entry Form. Photocopied I.D. should be submitted.

25. Preliminary briefing of all Choreographers/Official Representatives will be on June 05, 2022, at 1:00 PM at #16 Tigatto Road, Panorama Homes, Buhangin, Davao City

26. Final briefing of choreographers will be on August 14, 2022 at 1:00pm venue to be announced.

27. The Kadayawan sa Davao Sayaw Kadayawan Committee will provide the Out-of-Town participants modest accommodation and five (5) meals, August 17 -Dinner, August 18 -Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner, August 19 -Breakfast. Food provision is only good for the (25) participants, (1) choreographer, and (1) Chaperon/official representative.

28. All participating groups will be provided dinner on the competition date.
