37th Kadayawan Sa Dabaw 2022 Update: Pitik Kadayawan Drumbeating Competition Guidelines and Mechanics


One of the recently added highlight competition of the Kadayawan Festival is the Pitik Kadayawan Drumbeating Competition. In the early years of Indak-Indak sa Kadayawan and Floral Float Parade, while drumbeat has been part of the entry and judging, they only get little attention. In 2017, Kadayawan Execomm decided to include drumbeat competition, named Pitik Kadayawan as on the highlights of the Kadayawan Festival.

For the 37th Kadayawan sa Dabaw Pitik Kadayawan Drumbeating Competition, here are the Guidelines and Complete Mechanics.

PITIK KADAYAWAN 2022 (DRUM BEATING COMPETITION)

1. Any group, organization, institution or company can join the competition. Hence, it is an open category.

2. The competing group must have a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 30 musicians. All competing groups are allowed to mount a maximum of two (2) supporting vehicles, dressed with minimal embellishment inspired with Kadayawan Festival theme.

3. Each group must perform an exhibition/routine with a minimum of 3 minutes and a Maximum 5 minutes.

4. The entry’s contest piece may be a free interpretation of the City, Mindanaoan or any provincial folklore, tradition, myth, and legend in a form live music and shall depict the theme or concept of KADAYAWAN SA DABAW 2022 Celebration – STAND TALL...UNITED...RESILIENT...

5. The percussions must be 80% as the main instruments to be used. However, the remaining 20%, entries may add indigenous instruments like woodwind (kubing, palendag, tumpong, diwas, suling, sahunay, tungali lantoy) and strings (kuglog/kudlong, sauroy/sludoy, kudyapi).

6. Each entry MUST incorporate the KADAYAWAN SA DABAW official jingle in their Grand Showdown performance. The use of canned music is strictly prohibited.

7. Proper costumes/wardrobe shall be worn by all performers of each contingent including production assistants, ID bearers, as they are integral parts of the aesthetic value of each presentation.

8. Registration is FREE.

9. There will only be 20 official entries that can join the competition. In the event that there will be more than 20 interested groups, there will be a screening process to be done by the committee for further qualifications.

10. Deadline of submission of the entry form will be on August 05, 2022 at:

11. The Pitik Kadayawan contestants will draw lots for the sequence of the parade and street assignments for assembly purposes during the final briefing on August 15, 2022 at 1:00PM at the Kadayawan 2022 Secretariat Office (Venue: TBA).

12. All competing groups should be at the assembly place along Roxas Avenue between 5:00AM – 5:30AM. Competing groups that do not arrive at the said time shall be positioned at the last order of the parade.

13. The height of the vehicles should not exceed 12 ft. from the ground to avoid entanglement with the buntings and the electric wires. The vehicle to be used should be in good condition.

14. The following activities are NOT allowed, to wit:

  • Use of party poppers and any form of firecrackers
  • Littering
  • Wearing sexy and revealing clothes
  • Taking off clothes and/or shirts
  • Use of foul language, anti-government sentiments
  • Doing acrobatic stunts
  • Throwing of candies, cigarettes, towels, fans, caps, or any form of promotional and/or campaign materials/giveaways etc. that can distract the flow of the parade

15. The Pitik Kadayawan 2022 Organizer and Executive Committee reserves the right to disqualify any entry that fails to abide by the stipulation signified in these guidelines.

16. All outside Davao City contingents will be provided with accommodation and food:

  • August 20, 2022, (Saturday) - Dinner
  • August 21,2022, (Sunday) - Breakfast & Lunch. 
17. The Pitik Kadayawan 2022 Organizer and Executive Committee shall carefully select a panel of five (5) judges. Their decisions shall be considered final and therefore not appealable.

18. Criteria for judging are as follows:

  • Masterpiece (40%) – Precision of attacks and release, rhythm and tempo

  • Tonal Quality (20%) – Clarity and harmony

  • Interpretation (20%) – Technique and style

  • Deportment (20%) – Smartness in uniform and visual impact (Costume and vehicle design)
19. The prizes to be awarded are the following:

  • Grand Winner - P 200,000.00

  • 2nd - P 150,000.00

  • 3rd - P 100,000.00

  • 4th & 5th - P 50,000.00 (each)

  • 15 Consolation Prizes - P 10,000.00 (each)

  • Deportment Award - P 30,000.00
